Peritoneal Mesothelioma and Malignant Mesotheliomas
Peritoneal mesothelioma is less common than pleural mesothelioma, but both of these typically malignant mesotheliomas can be just as tragic. Peritoneal mesothelioma begins in the abdominal cavity, as opposed to the lungs and pleural areas of pleural mesothelioma. “Peritoneal” means it has to do with the peritoneum, which is a membrane that surrounds the abdominal area. “Pleural” refers to the pleura which is a membrane that surrounds the lungs. There is also a “pericardial” mesothelioma which targets the heart membrane first.
The lungs, abdominal area and heart all have a membrane made up of mesothelial cells, named the mesothelium. A cancerous attack of these membrane areas are mesotheliomas. Asbestos is the cause of peritoneal mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma in well over 90% of the cases. There are a few rare recorded cases of malignant mesothelioma when asbestos exposure was not identified. If you have been exposed to asbestos, there is a high chance you will suffer from an asbestos-caused disease such as asbestosis or pleural plaques. However, not all asbestos-caused diseases are fatal.
Peritoneal mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma can be fatal malignant mesotheliomas which spread uncontrollably, or they can be benign, when the tumor stays where it is and can likely be removed. Unexplainable weight loss is a mesothelioma symptom which may occur in as many as 90% of benign and malignant mesothelioma. Generally, benign mesothelioma tends to show less symptoms than malignant mesothelioma. Mesothelioma symptoms for peritoneal mesothelioma almost always includes abdominal pain. This is because there is excess fluid between the peritoneal membrane and the abdomen walls. Pleural mesothelioma has excess fluid in the pleural area and this causes shortness of breath and chest pain.
The mesothelioma symptoms of pleural mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma are not as outwardly visible as the symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma. In peritoneal mesothelioma, the abdomen can appear larger. Tumor masses may be visible, but external tumor visibility only occurs in a minority of peritoneal mesothelioma cases. Nausea is a common mesothelioma symptom with peritoneal mesothelioma, and the abdominal area will also be very tender.
In a healthy peritoneal area between the membrane and the wall, the peritoneal fluid helps the intestines move food. In peritoneal mesothelioma however, excess fluid causes bowel obstruction. The mesothelioma symptoms of extra fluid and bowel obstruction both contribute to abdominal pain. The bowel obstruction can also produce mesothelioma symptoms of constipation and diarrhea. Many peritoneal malignant mesothelioma patients have reported mesothelioma symptoms of a burning sensation in the abdomen. Mesothelioma symptoms for peritoneal malignant mesothelioma may not surface for 20-30 years after asbestos exposure, but it generally surfaces sooner than pleural mesothelioma.
Peritoneal mesothelioma is fortunately rare, however its rarity sometimes makes it harder to diagnose. The symptoms are similar to hernias and gall bladder problems, and identifying peritoneal mesothelioma in a CT scan is difficult. The medical industry is aware that asbestos-related diseases will be escalating over the upcoming years, and treatment for peritoneal malignant mesothelioma is undergoing many clinical trials. If you have been exposed to asbestos and have unexplainable abdominal pain and are experiencing unexplained weight loss, begin preliminary testing for peritoneal mesothelioma. The sooner the testing begins, the higher the chances for symptomatic relief, and hopefully today’s mesothelioma clinical trials will lead to a mesothelioma cure in the future.

Credit crunch, poor exchange rate and the property slump! … All of which, seem to be in every sentence read about the property market abroad.
As a consequence every European destination has been tarred with the same brush.
I write to defend the Majorca Property Market…
First I’ll describe the downfall of some of the new resorts…
New build and buying off plan has been ‘the craze’ across Europe, as well as possibly property all over the world. Whilst the concept is excellent and the potential that your property increases in value over the short term; we must when investing in property consider the long term benefits too.
If these so called ‘new resorts’ don’t sustain growth and have an increasingly efficient infrastructure then the resorts will die a death. The resorts will be a ghost town out of the main 3 month holiday season. You cannot have 20,000 apartments without an infrastructure to support them. By this I mean schools, supermarkets, buses, transport, restaurants, etc. If 10% of the owners move out to live, the resort must have sustainable infrastructure all year round.
If these apartments, cum duplex houses come onto the property market for resale after the first year, the property owners may have already seen this problem arise.
Why would I therefore defend ‘buying property in Majorca?’ …
Since the 1950’s Majorca has been a major holiday destination, and consequently because of its natural beauty people have continued to buy property. As we study the property sales in Majorca today we see a buoyant property market, when the rest of Europe is in a slump.
What does this mean? It means that Majorca is in demand. If you buy property in a new resort elsewhere in Europe there is a possibility that in ten years your property value will fall. Whereas the buoyancy in Majorca alone suggests that prices will either remain steady or show a steady increase.
If we compare an average villa price with mainland Spain over the last year we will see this demand and buoyancy principle in action…
Although I will accept the uncertain exchange rate has also affected the results, the underlying factor remains that property prices in Majorca has remained stable.
A villa on mainland Spain selling at 320,000 Euros a year ago is now selling at 260,000 Euros. Whereas the same priced villa in Majorca has actually increased by 5,000 Euros. So here is the crunch decision… Do you go chasing the possibility of earning 60,000 Euros once the property market returns and buy on mainland Spain; but also face the possibility of another slump and lose money. Or… invest in property in Majorca and see the value of your property steadily increase with time and reach the 60,000 threshold without panic within 5 to 10 years?
An astute investor of course would take the guarantee of a gradual increase and buy property in Majorca. If you are up for a gamble and include a risk of an unstable property market then study the European property market and stab your pin.
We love Majorca and live here. The best advice would be to buy a property where you know you can sell it.

After The Mortgage Comes The Move
Tips and Techniques to Avoid Moving Day Blues.
You managed the loan process and made it though closing with your sanity in check! Homeownership and the accompanying mortgage is a reality. Congratulations you’re moving! Condolences, you’re moving. Moving is exciting and stressful! In addition to the sheer amount of work involved in moving, there is the mental stress of handling the multitude of details involved in a move. We have included a few proven tips from moving veterans that will help ease the pain of moving day.
1-2 Months Before the Move
Begin making a checklist of magazines, bills and frequent mail so that you can update them with your new address. Magazines can take 4-6 weeks before the address change is made so the sooner the better.
Clear out the clutter. Before you obtain an estimate from movers you should donate, throw out or sell any items that you no longer need. Moving is the perfect time to make a fresh start and rid your home of unwanted or unused items.
Contact movers at least 1-2 months before your planned move date. You should obtain estimates from no less than 3 companies. Be aware that moving companies have various ways of charging you so it is important to understand the methodology. Will they charge by the pound or by the load? Will someone come out and provide a written estimate? (Highly recommended) Will they charge extra if there are stairs? Spend time obtaining detailed information so that there are no surprises on moving day.
A word of caution –the moving industry is a breeding ground for fraud so do check to ensure that the company is reputable, licensed and does not have a high record of consumer complaints. You may want to obtain references from your agent or friends and family and check out the company with the local Better Business Bureau.
1-2 Weeks Before Moving
Call all utility companies to have your services turned on at your new address. You will also want to complete a change of address with the postal service. This can be done in person or via the internet.
How long do you expect to live in your new home?
If you plan on living in your new home for only a few years, or if you don’t have children, then proximity to schools may not be an issue, but resale value may be. On the other hand, if you have a family and plan on staying put for ten years or more, schools and home size will be priorities.
What don’t you like about where you’re currently living?
Making a list of what you definitely do not want in a home will help you weed out homes without having to waste your valuable time looking at them.
Moving Tips
Pack one room at a time. Label each box with a description of its contents and its destination. You can also use a color code to specify the destination (e.g., blue for bathroom, yellow for kitchen). This will make unpacking much easier.
Label fragile or breakable items, such as fine china. You can put all the fragile items in one location so that they can be easily identified for the movers.
Use small boxes for heavy items. This will make them much easier to carry.
Use perishable items 1-2 weeks prior to move so that you are not forced to throw them away.
Pack a bag that contains essential items for each family member for 2-3 days. This should include clothing, toiletries, towels, and medications. Don’t forget your pets!
Ensure that you load anything that you will need immediately into the moving truck last, i.e. computers, work from the office. If you are driving to your new home, you may want to take these items with you.
Gather all important documents and take them with you. These would include birth certificates, passports, insurance cards, etc.
If you have children, be sure to have a bag with toys, games and snacks to keep them occupied during moving day.
Document what is being moved. You can list the large items, such as furniture and count the number of boxes and list that number. When the movers arrive at your new home, do ensure that all items are accounted for and have been moved. You may even wish to videotape what is being moved as a further record.
