N Scale Model Railroad Layouts

If you have been checking out the local model train store I?m sure you have discovered by now how the scale system works. The scales of model railroads are basically used to describe the ratio of the model train to the real version. With regards to the N scale model train it has a ratio of 1:148 that makes it one of the smallest scales on the market. They are extremely popular because of the many advantages they offer collectors with limited space.
Space is usually not the only factor considered when beginning a model train collection. However, if you are extremely limited in space the N scale will surely be high on your list of scales to consider. Due to its popularity the N scale has a wide range of accessories available in both cars and extensive landscape options.
The toy model trains available in N scale are also very popular due to the extensive amount of detailing on them. Even though they are one of the smallest scales they are exceptional in detail. If you are looking for something smaller than the N scale then you would need to go with the Z scale model train. The cost of the Z is among the least expensive, unfortunately you will be giving up a great deal of detail since the scale has become so small it is hardly worth being to creative since it is so small you would not be able to appreciate the work.
With the N scale model trains you have a scale that may be just the right size to fit into a compact space and also large enough to see the craftsmanship it possesses with great attention to detail. The N scale has become one of the popular choices for new collectors as well as those buyers who are purchasing the sets for young engineers during the holiday season. Check out your local model train shop to see the N scale in action. They can be used to layout elaborate model railroad systems. A word of caution: The size of the trains can make large layouts difficult due to difficulty with track conditions. There size can create layout problems if the track becomes too large since derailments are more frequent with smaller scales.
While you are at your model train store be sure and check prices on all of the scales. I believe you will find the N class to be very competitive when it comes to larger scale model trains. Since the N class is very popular right now it is manufactured more than other scales and therefore much less expensive. This means it offers great value for money and even though the material utilized is minimal there is an option to create more detail on it. So it’s a perfect way to start off when you want to spend limited amounts when delving into this hobby for the first time. Fuel for the N scale model train is available in many different varieties. You may use a live steam engine to power it, which can be fueled with butane or you may find mentholated spirit or fuel tablets made out of hexamine. Some other options for creating steam are using electricity. However, many collectors prefer to use plain ole basic electricity to run their model railway trains. All these options make it a very versatile choice. I am a great believer in playing with different models before diving into model trains as a hobby. So, get your shoes on and get down to your local train shop and play around with different scales until you find a good fit for you. Don?t be afraid to ask the shop owner lots of questions. A good model train shop owner will spend all the time you need to help you begin your new hobby. They want you to be a long-term loyal customer.

Should You Blog?
I’m often asked by beginners if they should build a website or a blog. My answer is always the same:
“Contrary to what you may have heard, a blog is a website.”
In fact, here’s how wikipedia defines a blog:
“A blog (a contraction of the term “web log”) is a web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.”
So you see, a blog is indeed a website.
Okay, now that I’ve cleared that up, let me explain why I prefer operating a blog site.
It really comes down to one word – simplicity. I’m technically handicapped, so I really need a simple platform from which to present my views and opinions, and conduct business.
And you just can’t beat the simplicity of a blog. In fact, today’s blogging software takes simplicity to a whole new level. To build a professional looking blog nowadays, it’s basically point and click, and you’re done!
It really is that simple.
When I decided to start my blog, I looked at the three most popular blogging platforms. Google’s Blogger, Wordpress and Typepad.
Typepad is a paid service with subscription plans starting at $4.95 per month. Blogger and Wordpress are both free services.
After reading information on all three services and doing some exhaustive research, I decided to go with Blogger. Why?
Again, it came down to simplicity. You just can’t beat the simplicity of Blogger’s platform. And Blogger’s boatload of free, easy-to-install features were also appealing to me.
Of course, that’s strictly a personal preference. And the last thing I want to do is sound like a commercial for Blogger. Perhaps you’ll find Wordpress or Typepad more to your liking.
Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of the top services. You can build a professional looking blog with either of the three.
And that’s really the point, isn’t it?
So should you blog?
Well, that depends. If you’re opinionated like I am, have something to say and want to share your views and opinions with the world, then you’ll probably find a comfort level with a blog.
But whether you decide to blog or not, if you’re building a website as a “for- profit” enterprise, it’s important that you take it seriously and treat it like a business. Because that’s exactly what it is.
That means approaching your business with commitment and passion. It means paying close attention to the appearance and functionality of your site – making sure it’s user-friendly.
It also means following up with your customers, refreshing your content regularly and concentrating on getting plenty of backlinks to your site.
If you’re not prepared to do those things on a consistent basis, then you’re not ready for a website.
But if you do decide to make that commitment, I look forward to seeing you on the internet!

Driving in France – French Driving For Your Vacation
Driving in France can be a delight. Away from big cities like Paris and Marseilles there is surprisingly little traffic and all kinds of stunning French scenery. If you’ve never driven in France before there are just one or two rules you should know that will make life easier.
I won’t go into driving on the right versus the left. If I you’re from the UK, Australia or any of the other places that drive on the left then driving on the right will be quite a change for you but actually it’s not as difficult as you might fear. All you really need to concentrate on is the direction people are coming at you at junctions, autoroutes (motorways) and when you leave car parks – that kind of thing. The rest of the time it’s pretty obvious where you need to go because everyone else is!
If you come into France via the English ferries you’ll probably come across all kinds of things that the stores claim motorists need for driving in France. Spare bulbs, fire extinguishers, dog guards, who knows what. A lot of it is untrue. What you need is a warning triangle – many cars have these built into the boot lid (trunk), but do check – and a reflective yellow safety jacket. A lightweight sleeveless one is perfectly adequate. If your car is right-hand drive you will need to adjust the headlamps or use those sticky plastic “beam-benders”. The last thing you need for driving in France is a sticker stating your country of origin. If your car is a recent model from the European Union this will probably be incorporated in the license plate, if not, the ferry companies usually give you a sticky one for free.
I haven’t mentioned documents because if you’re licensed to drive in your own country you are licensed to drive in France. Comprehensive insurance is not mandatory but probably a good idea and most insurance companies will probably be able to upgrade you for a limited period. If you do not have a photo license you must carry your passport at all times. You should also have your insurance and ownership documents with you in the car.
Any other French driving rules and regulations?
Well seat belts are mandatory all the time, unless you have a really old car and they weren’t fitted as standard. Children younger than ten are not allowed to travel in the front seat. Speed limits are usually clearly signed but if in doubt it’s 50 kph in any built up area, 90 kph in the country and 130 kph on autoroutes – although in bad weather you must slow down so the limit on open roads becomes 80 kph and autoroutes 110kph. There are plenty of speed cameras in France, usually with big, obvious black and white sings just before, but there are also spot checks so be careful. If you get caught by the roadside by one of those you can expect an instant fine – and they’re not cheap.
Beware also of having a glass of something with lunch and then driving. There are always stories about drunk French peasants trundling down some old back lane in their rusty old 2CV but the fact is French drink driving rules are very strict. If you fail a roadside test you will be taken to jail, right then. A certain way to wreck your French holiday so why take the risk?
That just about covers it for “rules”. Next time I’ll have a look at driving in France from the point of view of a few useful French phrases and some of the things that French driving might throw at you.

Property Market, Share Market, New Developments in Byron Bay
There has been a lot going on lately – shake down and confusion. During these times human emotion works like this – greed is the accelerator and fear is the break. Many people have been jumping from one pedal to other – or applying pressure to both at the same time – not good for the health of the vehicle.
Property Market:
Agents – can you trust them? – Some have been saying that it is still full tilt boogie and business is strong. I think this is an automatic default response. Some agree that the recent stock market melt down has slowed the property market a bit. Many people are just sitting on their hands and waiting for the dust to settle. The big question is will this market meltdown create the same rush to property that happened after the meltdowns in 87 and 2000.
Of course agents are predicting so but there are few indicators that may hinder that outcome – mainly interest rate fears and housing affordability. Yes property usually doubles in Australia every 9 years but there must be some constraints sometime around rental returns and the ability to purchase a house without a corresponding increase in incomes. At present it takes 7 times average annual income to buy an average Australian home – the highest ratio in the world. Can this keep increasing? Can rental returns keep going up to support the increasing costs of investment properties? Stay tuned for the next thrilling instalment!
To put Oz house prices in perspective – the only country if a higher median house price than Australia which is $412,000 is the UK at $472,000. Compare it with other similar countries: Spain $369,000, France $293,000, US and Canada $324,000.
Share Market:
After the revolution I will have all day traders taken out and shot – but in the meantime I am sure many are having a gay old time with the volatility. The All Ords is in a classic support and resistance trading pattern between 5600 and 5750. Day traders love this pattern as they wait to see which way it will break and then rush in – either with calls or puts. I think the break out will be mild and in an upward direction. I think the worst is over but all the uncertainties will keep it in a slow recovery.
One interesting thing with recent market “corrections” is the ferocity. This is due to the prevalence of margin lending. This is also a reason why even the top end of the property market has been affected by the recent downturn. Many people are holding their portfolios on margin – using blue chip shares as collateral and borrowing against them. Fine in a stable market but when there are sharp falls brokers are forced to sell out people on margin calls and the market tumbles even more drastically.
This causes harder than usual sell offs and a hairy roller coaster ride. The banks have been hit the hardest and, although it takes some courage to enter the market again just on yield alone the major banks are giving a good return with the share price way down the dividend yield combined with the imputation credit can give a return of double figures. (pls remember I am not qualified to give financial advice so this is just an opinion).
New developments
I thought I would talk a bit about a few of the things that is happening around the shire. Some of the new developments that are happening are worth a mention.
Kiah
Kiah Apartments are on Cavanbah Street between Shirley Street and the railway line. They have just been open for inspection. Not exactly beach front but close. This was a long time in coming this development with the developer facing the usual amount of hurdles and obstacles. They are up market 3 bed 2 story units with a starting price around $1.8M. No bargains there.
The Butter Factory
Just north of Mitre 10 on the south side of Jonson Street is being made over into The Butter Factory. Ten very swish architect designed apartments and some retail will retain some of the old structure from the Norco Butter Factory days. Prices here start at $950K for 1 bedroom and up to $1.5 for 3 bed. Go online and look as they look good and that sounds reasonable.
Sea Drift
Just at the southern roundabout in town in Browning Street is another Eric Freeman development of units between $500K – $750K each. Apparently these have been selling well and are good value for money but I have not inspected. Stage 2 and 3 are yet to be released so probably a safe off the plan buy. This one and the previous two are marketed by Byron Bay First National.

Opposite the Byron Golf Course on Broken Head Road the old Crosby Caravan Park (like most of the local caravan parks) are more than a face lift but a complete overhaul. This one is interesting in that they are offering 2 bed pre-fab units that start around $340,000. It is leasehold not freehold and body corporate is $100 a week – so you never own the land, just the building and a renewable 100 years lease. You can live in them or holiday let – or both.
Will be interesting to watch what happens with the Suffolk Park Caravan Park which is zoned “Community Use” as donated to council in a more relaxed time when nobody would ever of guessed it become such valuable real estate.

After all the years of strife I think that what finally is going to happen here will be good – and leave lots of natural habitat. I think it will be a win for the community as they seem like they are going to do a good job – sensitive aesthetic development, regenerate some bush and still be a good space for community events like the writers festival. Also it looks like good value – 1 bed apartments start at $380K, 2 bed beach house for $630K and bigger homes at 1.2 and 2M. Everybody is wondering how they are going to police the 3 month limit on owner occupier as it is licensed for holiday let – I know of a few people lining up to settle in for the long term.
Epicentre
Well the old landmark is finally flattened – thank god what an eyesore. But the end of an era now that the whaling and meat abattoir is no longer a Byron feature. 19 residential lots are planned. Prices are not yet decided but would have to $1.5M at least.
The only other piece of news is that it looks like we have had the wettest and coolest summer in over 20 years and that has had an impact on retail and holiday letting.

If your source was a book for example, get all the detail down to the ISBN number. If your research is by word of mouth, write down names, times and dates. Genealogy is all about information, so backing up your facts is critical.
Following a similar theme, you need to organise yourself and your research. File everything and file things where you know how to locate them. You will find yourself back tracking continuously, so make that side of genealogy as painless as possible.
Check your facts. Not just the literal snippets of information that you pick up, but also the logical order of things. Do the facts that you have collected make sense? Apply common sense to all of your findings and question them.
Do not accept carte blanche research from sources you don’t know. What I mean by this is really the types of research that one often sees advertised, offering to write up your family tree for a fee. Beware of these types of offers. The type of research upon which these tress are founded are often questionable. Save your money and do the research yourself. That is after all, part of the fun of genealogy!
If your family has spread it’s wings across borders, be very careful when collecting facts. As one example, dates can be written differently depending on where in the world you are at the time. Easy mistakes can be made under these circumstances. The date 05/04/75 means something different to people in the USA than it does to people in the UK.
Do not make assumptions about any piece of information that you might come across. Stick with the facts that you yourself have collected. One small assumption can lead you in all sorts of directions that you didn’t really want to go down. Remember that we refer to things differently now than we did in years gone by, so when something is taken from letters 100 years ago, it might not mean the same thing to you as it did to your forefathers.
Join up with web sites that have expertise in genealogy. Talk with like minded people and get the benefit of their experience. Not only will they have tips of their own to share to help you, they will have access to sources you might never have thought of. It is well worth your time talking to other genealogists.
